- as a source of data for ubiquitous systems research (input) and
- as the outcome of the ubiquitous systems research that is opened for others to use (output).
Seminar gives an introduction to issues related to using open data in ubiquitous systems research and opening scientific data from this type of research. Participants will actively participate to identifying issues to deal with and solve, ideating using open data and opening of research data, as well as to joint knowledge creation on the topic. In addition, participants concretely create a data management plan related to their own research topic that will help them in their future research work and applying for funding.
In a simplified form the two aspects of open data in relation to research as used or created materials are illustrated in Figure 1.
Open data that is used in ubiquitous systems research as "input" can be data that already exists. It can be scientific data that is opened for use by other researchers, or it can be data collected and opened by other stakeholders, such as organizations, businesses, municipalities, or citizens. In addition, combinations from several open data sources, whether scientific or other open data, can be used within research.
On the other hand ubiquitous systems research can create data that can be opened. The use of this data can be scientific, but data could also be used by companies or citizens alike.
Seminar is organized by Dr. Heli Väätäjä on behalf of the UBINET doctoral training network. Seminar is primarily intended for doctoral students, but also other researchers or graduate level students are welcome to join.
